Preventative Maintenance:
Prior to end of heating season, adjust oil deliveries so oil will be nearly consumed.
Remove manhole.
Pump oil tank down to within 6" of bottom of tank.
Pump sludge from bottom of tank and flush. Dispose of appropriately.
Disconnect heating coil, remove from tank and clean.
Examine tank for leaks, condition of piping connections.
Clean and adjust oil transfer pumps (oil or steam driven).
Examine, clean, and adjust operation of strainers, traps, control valves, oil flow meter, oil temperature and pressure gauges.
Check floats and leveling devices in tank. Check float adjustment with depth level indicators.
Clean breather vents, conservation vents, and flame arrestors where appropriate.
Clean surrounding area, record results and findings and report any needed repairs or operational adjustments.
Safety Warnings or Special Precautions:
If a person must enter tank, test for oxygen deficiency, and supply proper respirator as needed.
Safety harness must be worn.
Obtain and review manufacturer's instructions. Follow manufacturer’s instructions or procedures if different to these instructions or procedures.
Review Standard Operating Procedures for Confined Space Entry.
Review Standard Operating Procedures for Selection, Care, and Use of Respiratory Protection.
Tools & Materials Required:
Standard and Phillips head screw drivers-various sizes; Pliers-vise grip (2), slipjoint, needlenose, diagonal; cutting pliers, side cutters; Ball peen hammer; Hack saw and spare blades; 3/8' drive socket set and ratchet; Small set of Allen wrenches; Assorted center punches, drift punches, and steel chisel; 12' measuring tape; Crescent wrenches 4" to 8"; Open and box end wrenches ¼" to ¾"; File; Pipe wrenches to 14"; Small level and square; Pocket knife; Flashlights; Grease guns and oilers; Wire brush; Extension cord and inspection lights; Various cleaning tools - brushes, scrapers, etc; Emery cloth.
Pipe wrenches to 24"; Tubing cutters; Flaring tool; Small acetylene outfit; Packing tool kit and packing; ¾" socket setCrescent wrenches to 14"
Safety goggles.
Gloves.
